알렉스 카츠는 벌입니다. 그는 붓과 기름진 꽃가루로 우리의 상상 속 꽃을 비옥하게 합니다. 그는 벌처럼 존재하지 않던 것을 존재로 만들어 냅니다. 벌처럼 그는 꽃에서 꽃으로, 꽃잎에서 꽃잎으로, 수술에서 수술로 이동합니다. 본능의 지시를 따르며 꾸준히 일합니다. 알렉스 카츠는 동굴 화가입니다. 우리 시대의 동굴 화가이자, 간절히 기도하건대 아직 오지 않은 시대의 동굴 화가입니다. 아직 오지 않은 눈을 위해. 4만 년 후, 꽃은 더 이상 존재하지 않지만 이 그림은 존재한다면, 이 그림은 작가가 없을 것입니다. 경외심에 찬 눈빛으로 이 그림들을 바라보는 이들은 오직 한 인간이 그렸다는 사실만 확신할 것입니다. 그리고 그것이 중요한 전부입니다.
알렉스 카츠(1927년생, 뉴욕 브루클린)는 현대를 대표하는 화가입니다. 상징적인 초상화와 장엄한 풍경화로 유명한 카츠는 여러 세대의 화가들에게 영감을 주었습니다. 카츠의 작품은 그의 광범위한 커리어 동안 수많은 회고전과 개인전의 주제가 되었습니다.
Alex Katz is a bee. With his brush and oily pollen, he fertilizes the flowers in our imagination. Like a bee he has conjured into existence what was not here. Like a bee he moves from bloom to bloom, petal to petal, stamen to stamen. Steadily working, fulfilling the directives of his instinct. Alex Katz is a cave painter. The cave painter of our times and, we desperately pray, of the times yet to come. For eyes yet to come. If, in forty thousand years, when perhaps flowers no longer exist but these paintings do, they will have no author. Those whose longing eyes pass over them with awe will be certain only that they were made by a fellow human. And that is all that matters.
Alex Katz (b. 1927, Brooklyn, NY) is the preeminent painter of modern life. Acclaimed for his iconic portraits and epic landscapes, Katz has inspired generations of painters. Katz's work has been the subject of numerous retrospectives and solo presentations over the course of his expansive career.
