ART CHOSUN과 TV CHOSUN이 공동 주최하고 ACS 가 기획한 김창열(1929-2021)의 《물방울 연대 : The Water Drops from Paris to Korea》가 2023년 9월 6일부터 10월 28일까지 광화문 아트조선스페이스에서 개최된다. 총 회화 24점으로 구성된 이번 전시는 연대(年代)별로 김창열의 예술 세계 전반을 총망라하여 물방울 탄생 이후의 그 전개 과정을 유기적인 관점에서 재조명한다.
이번 전시에서는 물방울이 처음으로 김창열의 작품에 등장하기 시작한 <Water Drops>(1973)부터 화면 속 한자가 도입된 회귀(Recurrence)연작, 물방울과 얼룩의 병치가 돋보이는 <Water Drops>(2003), 다양한 색과 형태의 변화를 시도한 채도 높은 노란색 바탕의 <Recurrence>(2010)까지 한 자리에서 선보인다. 파리 체류 당시 시작된 물방울 초기 작품부터 빛의 반사 효과로 인한 물방울 그림자가 두드러지는 말기 작품까지 예술 세계 전반을 아우른다. 또한 쇼윈도 공간에 설치된 300호 크기의 초대형 회귀 작품도 함께 선보이는데 한자와 이미지의 대비를 너머 동양 철학을 집약한 작품으로 관람객에게 큰 울림을 줄 것이다.
특히 이번 전시 서문은 작가의 차남인 김오안 감독이 맡았다. 김창열에 관한 다큐멘터리 영화 <물방울을 그리는 남자(The Man Who Paints Water Drops)>(2021)의 공동 감독이기도 한 김오안은 아버지 김창열에 대한 기억을 이번 전시를 위해 글로 풀어냈다. 김오안 감독은 전시 서문에서 “생전 아버지께서는 늘 품위를 지녀야 한다고 강조하셨다. 오늘날 현대 사회에서 이런 말들의 의미가 다소 퇴색했을지는 몰라도, 아버지의 작품은 여전히 그 의미를 아름답게 뒷받침해 주는 듯하다”라고 했다.
Co-presented by ART CHOSUN and TV CHOSUN and curated by ACS, "The Water Drops Chronology: The Water Drops from Paris to Korea" by Kim Chang-yeol (1929-2021) will be held from September 6 to October 28, 2023 at Art Chosun Space, Gwanghwamun. Consisting of 24 paintings, the exhibition will cover the entirety of Kim Chang-yeol's artistic world by chronological period, reexamining the development of water drops since their birth from an organic perspective.
The exhibition presents works from Water Drops (1973), when water drops first appeared in Kim's work, to the Recurrence series, which introduces Chinese characters on the screen, Water Drops (2003), with its juxtaposition of drops and stains, and Recurrence (2010), with its saturated yellow background and various color and form changes. From the early works of Water Drops, which began during his stay in Paris, to his later works, which are characterized by the shadows of water drops caused by the reflection of light, the exhibition covers the entire artistic world. In addition, a large-scale regression work of 300 issues installed in the window space will also be presented, which will resonate with visitors as a work that incorporates Eastern philosophy beyond the contrast of Chinese characters and images.
Director Kim Oan, the artist's second son, will provide an introduction to the exhibition. Kim, who is also the co-director of The Man Who Paints Water Drops (2021), a documentary film about Kim Chang-yeol, put his memories of his father into words for this exhibition. "During his lifetime, my father always emphasized the importance of maintaining dignity," Kim writes in the exhibition's foreword. Although the meaning of these words may have faded somewhat in today's modern society, I think my father's work still supports them beautifully."
