리만머핀 서울은 미국의 화가이자 저자, 큐레이터로 활동하는 데이비드 살레(David Salle)의 신작을 소개하는 전시 《World People》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 리만머핀 서울에서 열리는 작가의 두 번째 개인전으로, 2020년부터 작가가 선보여 온 <Tree of Life> 연작의 최신작을 만날 수 있는 자리이다. 작품 속 경쾌한 캐리커처와 행위적 추상을 통해 살레는 형식적, 개념적, 심리적 차원을 가로지르는 예술과 삶의 문제들을 극적으로 연출한다.
살레의 <Tree of Life> 연작에는 리듬과 음악적 감각이 스며 있다. 이질적인 이미지와 색상, 다양한 화법을 구사하며 특유의 회화적 문법을 구축한 그의 작품은 서술적 묘사 그 이상의 아우라로 뚜렷한 울림을 선사한다. 화면에 반복적으로 등장하는 조형 요소와 무관하게 작품은 내용을 쉽게 간파할 수 없도록 의도적으로 설계된다. 각 화면에는 신문 삽화풍 인물들이 등장하는데, 이들은 중앙을 수직으로 양분하는 ‘생명의 나무(tree of life)’와 추상적 붓놀림으로 채워진 하단 구획에 의해 단절된 화면 위에 놓이게 된다. <Tree of Life, Couple>(2023)에서 황토색 나무를 기준으로 왼편에는 두 남녀가 포옹을 하고, 오른편에는 줄무늬 옷을 입은 또 다른 남성이 커플을 응시하고 있다. 그는 타인의 사생활을 몰래 훔쳐보는 것인가? 죄수복을 입은 관음증 환자인가, 아니면 잠옷을 걸친 채 바람난 아내를 바라보는 남편인가? 세 명의 인물과 교차하는 나뭇가지는 보는 이의 시선을 의문의 사건으로부터 떨어뜨리고 점차 줄기를 따라 하단의 다채로운 추상의 영역으로 이끈다. 생명의 나무는 전시 전반에서 반복되는 소재로, 이를 만물 창조의 근원으로 여긴 여러 종교, 철학, 신화적 전통을 시사한다. 나무의 존재는 작가의 연작에 일관성을 부여하는 한편 흑백의 인물이 만들어낸 멜로드라마를 위협하는 색상과 추상의 불협화음적 요소들을 촉발시킨다.
<Tree of Life> 연작에서 나타나는 살레의 시각 양식은 세련된 유머와 일러스트레이션으로 『뉴요커 The New Yorker』 지에 명성을 안겨준 전설적 삽화가 피터 아르노(Peter Arno)의 영향을 받은 것이다. 플레이보이, 재벌, 쾌락주의자가 주요 인물로 등장하는 아르노의 캐리커처는 뉴욕 엘리트의 위선을 풍자적으로 폭로한다. 살레의 <Tree of Life> 또한 유사한 희극적 구도을 취한다. 그의 대상은 상류 사회 구성원부터 숲 속 동물까지 망라하나 모두 핵심 펀치라인(punchline)이 부재한 상황 속에 놓여 있다. 위와 같은 다양한 인물들은 전시 전반에서 상호 대화와 움직임을 나누며 모호하지만 분주한 동작으로 각자의 태피스트리를 직조한다. 살레는 『뉴요커』의 흑백 스타일을 충실히 따라 인물을 무채색으로 묘사한 반면 나무에는 대담한 색상을 가한다. 이와 같은 대비는 작품에 생기를 불어넣는다. 인간·동물 소재와 구상·추상 형식이 화면 안에서 충돌하고 조화를 이룸에 따라 각 작품은 활발한 동적 에너지로 들끓는다.
형식과 개념, 익숙함과 낯섦을 나란히 환기시키는 이번 전시작은 예술을 바라보는 심리적 과정에서의 충돌을 촉구한다. 살레의 작업은 내용에 대한 해답을 제시하는 동시에 유보하면서 흔히 그림에서 서사를 발견하고 투영하고자 하는 인간의 준보편적 경향을 드러낸다. 작가가 연출한 “작은 연극”은 보는 이들을 하나의 제안된 스토리라인으로 끌어들이지만, 이는 곧 그들을 추상의 혼돈 속으로 몰아넣을 뿐이다. 상반되는 요소들의 풍부한 디테일에 시선을 빼앗길 때조차 살레는 능숙하게 전체 구성에 다시 주의를 기울인다. 부분의 총합 그 이상이 되는 요소들이 창조해낸 역동적인 서정성은 작가가 화가로서 오랜 활동 기간 동안 확립한 그만의 고유한 특징으로 여겨진다. 결국 그의 말처럼 “모든 것은 붓 끝에서 완성된 표식들로 귀결되는 것이다.”

LimanMerfin Seoul is pleased to present World People, an exhibition of new works by American painter, author, and curator David Salle. This is the artist's second solo exhibition at RIMANMERFIN Seoul and is the latest installment of his Tree of Life series, which he has been presenting since 2020. Through lighthearted caricatures and performative abstraction, Saleh dramatizes issues of art and life across formal, conceptual, and psychological dimensions.
Saleh's Tree of Life series is imbued with rhythm and a sense of music. His use of disparate images, colors, and a variety of pictorial techniques builds a distinctive pictorial grammar that resonates with an aura that goes beyond narrative description. Regardless of the recurring sculptural elements on the screen, the work is deliberately designed to be unreadable. Each screen features newspaper illustration-style figures, which are placed on a screen that is broken up by a "tree of life" that bisects the center vertically and a lower compartment filled with abstract brushstrokes. <In Tree of Life, Couple (2023), a man and woman embrace on the left against an ocher-colored tree, while another man in striped clothing stares at the couple on the right. Is he a voyeur in a prisoner's uniform, or a husband looking at his cheating wife in her nightgown? The branches that intersect with the three figures draw the viewer's attention away from the mysterious events and gradually lead them down the trunk to the colorful abstract realm below. The tree of life is a recurring motif throughout the exhibition, alluding to the various religious, philosophical, and mythological traditions that have recognized it as the source of all creation. The presence of the tree lends coherence to the artist's series and triggers a cacophony of color and abstraction that threatens the melodrama created by the black and white figures.
Saleh's visual style in the Tree of Life series is influenced by the legendary illustrator Peter Arno, whose sophisticated humor and illustrations made him a household name in The New Yorker. Featuring playboys, tycoons, and hedonists, Arno's caricatures satirically expose the hypocrisy of New York's elite. Saleh's Tree of Life takes a similar comedic approach. His subjects range from members of high society to forest animals, but all are placed in situations that lack a central punchline. These various characters interact and move throughout the exhibition, weaving their own tapestries with ambiguous but bustling gestures. Faithful to the black-and-white style of The New Yorker, Saleh depicts the figures in neutral colors, while the trees are boldly colored. This contrast brings the work to life. As human and animal subjects and figurative and abstract forms collide and harmonize on the canvas, each piece is alive with dynamic energy.
Juxtaposing form and concept, familiarity and unfamiliarity, the exhibition calls for a collision in the psychological process of viewing art. Saleh's work reveals the quasi-universal human tendency to find and project narratives in paintings, often with reservations, while at the same time providing answers to their content. The "little plays" staged by the artist draw the viewer into a proposed storyline, only to plunge them into abstract chaos. Even when the eye is drawn to the rich detail of the opposing elements, Saleh skillfully draws attention back to the overall composition. The dynamic lyricism created by elements that become more than the sum of their parts is a distinctive feature of the artist's work that he established over the course of his long career as a painter. After all, as he says, "It all comes down to the marks made at the tip of the brush."
